Guidances for Passengers   Guidances for Assisting A Person Falling into the Water

Before the trip

•  For travel by sea, listen to daily weather forecast. Lf there is a warning of strong wave and storm, you should cancel the trip.

•  Avoid traveling alone if you cannot swim. But, if you really have to, you should inform the skipper and other passengers nearby.

•  Be suitably dressed. Choose dress and footwear which can be easily taken off. Do not wear shoes with tying string. Lf you have to, loosen your shoelaces or take off your shoes after getting on board. Boots are absolutely unsuitable for traveling by boat.

•  Wait for the boat on shore or on pier, not on floating landing as it may capsize if a number of passengers exceeds its capacity.

•  Lf the boat is fully loaded, wait for the next coming.

•  Do not scramble to get on or get off a boat. Wait until the boat comes to a complete stop.

On the boat

•  Do not move or change the seat to avoid sunlight or splashes of water because it will make the boat unstable.

•  After getting on a boat, go inside and do not stand at the aft or sit on the gunwale or on the roof of the boat. Do not gather at only one side of the boat.

•  Do not be panic when the boat tills or rolls. Try to hold the back of the seat in front of you. Lf you sit on the leaning gunwale, do not move or try to lean against the boat.

•  Do not get drunk while tarvelling by sea.

•  To get off a boat, do not stand up simultaneously as it may make the boat capsized. When the boat continues her voyage, the remaining passengers should rearrange their seats to maintain the boat's stability.

While a boat is underway, passengers may fall into the water due to carelessness or the boat suddenly loses her stability. If such accident occurs, the following procedures should be followed:

Passengers witnessing the incident

•  Shout a the helmsman and tell him clearly from which gunwale a passenger falls into the water in order to turn the boat so that the propeller will not harm that passenger.

•  Throw life-saving devices such as life buoy or life jacket to, a person falling into the water. Lf there is no such devices, find any other floating objects such as boards, seat cushions, tanks and throw them to that person.

•  Call the Marine Department's hotline 1199.

Person falling into the water

•  Keep mindfulness. After falling into the water, quickly swim other floating objects such as boards, seat cushions, tanks and throw them to that person.

•  After keeping a safe distance from danger of the propeller, stop swimming and just float. Do not try to swim after the boat or to th shore.

•  Take off shoes, belts or belongings.

•  Grab floating objects to support the body. Lf unable to grab or nobody throws such things, take off a shirt or pants and make it like a balloon to use for temporary floating.

•  Float until the boat turns back to assist or being moved by the current to the shore or shallow area or any safe area. Then swim to that destination and wait for the assistance.
